Press Statement – By YB. Dato’ Wira Abu Seman Bin Yusop Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Malaysia

Kenyataan Media/Akhbar

Malaysia was shocked to learn on the recent boat tragedy in the shore of Indonesia that was reported to be heading up to Australia. This unfortunate incident is a strong evidence of the growing problem of irregular migration that has to be dealt by the countries in the Asia Pacific region. Thus, it is a critical regional issue that needs regional solution to it.

Malaysia and Australia have decided to proceed with a bilateral engagement to seek redress on the growing problems of irregular migration in the region under the ambit of the Regional Cooperation Framework endorsed at the recent Bali Process Ministerial Meeting. As the framework has yet to take into effect and would take time to materialise, Malaysia and Australia have taken a bold approach to rid the people smuggling syndicates in addressing the issue of irregular migration including people smuggling and trafficking in persons as desired by the Regional Cooperation Framework.

The significant element under the Regional Cooperation Framework is the avenue for both signatory and non-signatory members of the United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees to work collectively and holistically on the issue of irregular migration including people smuggling and trafficking in persons.

Nevertheless, the full impact of the bilateral arrangement between Malaysia and Australia could not be ascertained unless and until it is allowed to be put into reality.

Malaysia is always co-operative and ready to help combat human trafficking & people smuggling networks. That is why the cutting edge approach with Australia are important and we are happy to bring back the agreement with the Australian government if it will means to stop more people to risk their life.
